Poetry Competition - Top 3 Entries

Back in December, we held a poetry competition and were overwhelmed with the number and quality of entries. We are delighted to announce the top three poetry entries selected for the Broughton High School Poetry Anthology below.  Well done to all our poets!

The Girl Who Didn’t Stop by Tuana Osami

Let me tell the tale, of a girl that didn’t stop,
Who climbed every mountain
Without a pause upon the top
Where the sun knew her by name
And the moon did too
For a fear had settled in her bones,
A fear for sitting still
So in time a dance got slower
Trying to find the hidden gaps in her life,
But all that was,
Was to simply be a human being.

Once a Month by Macey Scanlan

Once a month I see him,
A cuddle of blankets
A huddle of blackness
His smile pulls me
His cries push me
One hour of holding
One hour that won’t last

And when that moment comes
To say goodbye
The ache in my chest
Is too hard to hide
Slowly walking away
Just learning to cry.

Let’s Go Back by Maya Chohan

Let’s go back
to the little blue mats,
to chalk-dust hands
And ponytails swinging
As if they could fly.

Let’s go back
to the days when cartwheels
felt like second nature,
when balance beams
weren’t scary,
just skinny little roads
to somewhere exciting.

Let’s go back
to the feeling of being brave
without even trying,
when my body knew
exactly what to do
before my mind even caught up.

Now I try
and everything feels heavier
like my muscles forgot
the language they once spoke
so easily.

But maybe
the girl I used to be
is still somewhere inside of me,
waiting
for me to stretch, breathe,
and try again.

Let’s go back
not to be who I was,
but to remind myself
I can still find
the part of me
that flew.
