Sustainable Design and Manufacturing Competition - BAE Systems
This year in Design Technology it will be our 3rd year taking part in a project focussing on sustainable design and manufacturing using 3D printed outcomes. The competition organised by BAE Systems, is to encourage pupils into 3D Manufacturing, Product Design and Engineering. Last year, our Broughton team entry got through to the finals and gained second place, an amazing achievement. This year our Broughton Team, Reggie Nash and Iain Cubitt from Year 9, were selected as one of the finalist teams from hundreds of entries from schools throughout Lancashire.
Iain and Reggie were invited as finalists to BAE to present their idea to the board of judges.
Their entry was a battery bin to encourage recycling as their research showed that many accidental fires happen each year due to batteries not being disposed of correctly. Their presentation was professional, and the judges were impressed with their thorough research and their attention to detail in getting their design prototype to function correctly. I am delighted to tell you that they were awarded first prize. What an outstanding achievement for two very hard working and dedicated young men; I am sure they have bright careers ahead of them, possibly at BAE! I would like to wish them all the best as they start their new courses in both Product Design GCSE and Engineering starting in September. The new competition will run from September with KS3 so please keep your eyes out for any information. If you are interested in the competition, please speak to either myself or Mr Lowe.
