Year 7 Boys' Team
On Thursday, 15th May, the Year 7 boys travelled to UCLan Sports Arena to compete in the annual Rotary Club Football Tournament. This is a high standard event with some of the top footballing schools from across Lancashire in attendance. The boys were in 1 of 3 leagues of 6, so 18 school in attendance in total. With the top 2 from each league qualifying for the next round. Broughton's first game was against a very strong Hutton Grammar side, the boys went 1-0 down within 30 seconds. However, after a quick chat and reminders about roles in the team, the boys began to play and were soon winning 3-1. Unfortunately, in the last minute concentration again dropped with people not tracking their runners and Hutton hit 2 quick goals to equalise. Final score 3-3.
The team did not concede another goal in the next 3 fixtures winning each game by 2 or 3 goals, with Oliver Ward enjoying a scoring spree, especially with his head from corners. The group was incredibly tight with Hutton winning all their games except a draw with us and Bishop Rawsthorne, leaving them on 11 points. Bishop Rawsthorne had only draw with Hutton putting them on 10 points along with Broughton also on 10 points. The final game in the group was Bishops v Broughton. This was a really tense game with both sides playing quite defensive, with only 2 minutes left the score remained 0-0. In the dying seconds, Bishops were awarded a penalty and won the game 1-0 knocking Broughton out of the tournament. This was a harsh end to what was a great competition and the boys really improved over the tournament. Better understanding their roles and need to track runners off the ball and work just as hard defensively as they do when they have the ball. Which makes me excited for next year as we move to 11-a side football in Year 8.
