U16 Basketball - Preston Basketball League
The U16 basketball team travelled to Longridge High School this week in the Preston Basketball League. A large portion of the Longridge team were Year 10 pupils who last year were the U14 Lancashire Basketball Champions. The Broughton team had won their previous two fixtures this season but knew this was going to be a much tougher test. Throughout the game, Longridge had a 4 point lead but a resolute Broughton team stayed within touching distance. The mantra of the night was defence … and blocking Longridge from driving to the basket. The team were relentless from start to finish and in the final quarter of the game Broughton completely shut Longridge out, denying them from scoring a single point.
Throughout the last quarter, as a result of constant passing and fast movement of the ball through hands, Broughton closed the gap. Finally in a Hollywood moment Sam Willingale, who scored 25 out of 29 points scored a 2 point shot on the buzzer to win the game 29-27. The whole team were superb throughout and never stopped working together for the duration of the game.
Team: Mariam Soliman, Tom Irwin, Elijah Cruz, Charlie Hamilton, Isaac Austin and Sam Willingale (MVP).
