Year 11 Geographers- GCSE River Study
On Wednesday 9th September, 40 of our Year 11 Geography pupils headed to the beautiful Trough of Bowland to complete their GCSE river fieldwork investigation. For once, the weather followed instructions, providing us with glorious sunshine and spectacular scenery throughout the day. The aim of the study was to test the hypothesis that the cross-section of the River Wyre changes over distance. Pupils visited three different sites as they travelled towards Abbeystead, carefully measuring the width and depth of the river at each location. They also investigated how sediment size changes downstream, using random sampling techniques to select their samples. spent more time in the river than being eaten by passing dogs. The day was a tremendous success thanks to the excellent behaviour, enthusiasm and willingness of our pupils to get involved in every aspect of the fieldwork. The data collected will now form an important part of their GCSE Geography studies. A huge thank you goes to the staff who helped make the trip possible: Mr Ellis, Mr Florentine, Mr Whalley and Miss Cutts. Their support and good humour throughout the day were greatly appreciated.
