Art is one of the highest forms of human creativity.
Our aim is for pupils to learn how to enjoy & engage with Artist’s work, acquire cultural capital and become visually literate, creative, open-minded, and expressive individuals.
Broughton Art Department aims to deliver outstanding lessons in a stimulating and visually engaging environment. Art lessons at Broughton have a safe and purposeful working atmosphere where artistic excellence is sought, and creative endeavour is respected and valued.
We want all pupils to fulfil their artistic potential, feel proud of their achievements & develop a lifelong love of the arts.

Business
Business is an interesting, relevant and challenging subject which gives pupils the opportunity to run their own business and learn about enterprise, the economy and the workings of a business in the twenty-first century. The business facilities include a specialist room complete with ICT facilities which enable pupils to access the best learning.

The Computing Department is a successful, dynamic and forward-thinking Department where staff are committed to stretch our pupils’ understanding of Computer Science and help them achieve an insight of the subject beyond the curriculum and in all walks of life. We are keen to embrace new technologies which enhance the learning experience we provide for our pupils. The Department has a supportive, friendly atmosphere where new ideas and approaches are welcomed and openly discussed. We always aim to make our Computing lessons challenging, stimulating and fun.

Dance
Dance
Dance is the newest subject to be offered at GCSE at Broughton High School. It builds upon a foundation that is delivered at Key Stage 3 as part of the PE curriculum.
Dance lessons are delivered in our school gym, fitted with mirrors and specialist dance flooring. At Key Stage 3, pupils delve into a range of cultures and dance genres building up a repertoire of choreographic tools to develop their creativity.

Design and Technology
Design and Technology (D&T) is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject which prepares all young people to live and work in the designed and made world.
At Broughton we are very proud of our recently refurbished 'state of the art' facilities that offer all our pupils access to the very best teaching and learning resources.

Drama
Drama
At Broughton, all Drama lessons are taught in a purpose built Drama Studio to offer all pupils access to the very best teaching and learning resources. We strive to foster an appreciation of the arts and to ensure pupils have the opportunity to participate in practical work as well as gaining knowledge and life skills.
As pupils progress through Key Stage 3 they are given the opportunity to focus on specific aspects of performance skills including acting, directing, stage managing, lighting, sound, set, props, costume and make up designs. The department is dedicated to developing the confidence, communication and team work skills of all pupils, which prepares young people to confidently live and work in the wider world.

In English, we aim to deliver an enriching, inspiring and challenging curriculum which immerses pupils in different places, contexts and cultures. Our focus is on creating an atmosphere in which pupils develop their curiosity for the written word and enjoy taking an active part in their lessons. Our intention is to channel a love of literature so that we can develop confident speakers, reflective readers and fluent, accurate and imaginative writers. The curriculum is designed with a clear rationale at the heart of it, where content, expertise and skill-sets are purposefully built upon across the 5 years of study. By interleaving content and skills, and progressively increasing the level of difficulty and challenge, all pupils are provided with a learning experience that develops them academically, personally and spiritually.

In Geography at Broughton, we want to inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.Our aim is to provide a rich and knowledge-based Geography curriculum which allows our pupils to have an improved knowledge of the world, a better understanding of how it works and the geographical skills to support their understanding. Ultimately, we want our pupils to be thoughtful global citizens, understand what is going on around them and understand how they can choose to make a difference.

History
History is a vital subject for helping pupils understand and make sense of the world in which they live. We want our pupils to be inquisitive and to be able to critically analyse issues and information with confidence. Pupils will study elements of British, European and wider world History from a range of perspectives and are encouraged to engage with genuine historical debate and scholarship. We follow the national curriculum for History and the AQA syllabus at GCSE.

Mathematics
Mathematics is taught by specialist teachers and classrooms are located in one area of the school. The mathematics department at Broughton is regarded as one of the most successful mathematics departments in Lancashire. We also rate very highly in National figures and GCSE results have been outstanding year on year. Pupils enjoy learning in the department and accept the challenges set by teachers who have high expectations of each and every student.

Music
Music at Broughton is fun, challenging and motivating. For many pupils, Music is a new subject to them after leaving Primary School. In the department we have two teaching rooms and two practice rooms. We have a music studio which is equipped with keyboards, computers and the latest music software.

The Physical Education department aims to provide a safe atmosphere in which all pupils can enjoy and achieve in sport. We also aim to challenge all pupils to follow a healthy active lifestyle both in and out of the school environment, with the department boasting an exceptional range of curricular and extra-curricular opportunities for students.

Religious Education at Broughton follows the Lancashire Agreed Syllabus for RE – Searching for Meaning. The aim of this syllabus is to support pupils’ personal search for meaning by engaging enquiry into the question ‘What does it mean to be human?’- exploring answers offered by religion and worldviews.’

In Science, we aim to deliver an engaging, inspiring and challenging curriculum that promotes skills of investigation, questioning analysis, and experimental techniques. The intent of the science curriculum is to develop all pupils’ understanding and love of science whilst igniting and maintain pupils’ curiosity about the world in which we live.

Reading
Every subject has a reading-rich curriculum, which increases background knowledge and cultural capital. Our aim is for every pupil to increase in their confidence and fluency in reading whilst at Broughton. We foster a culture of reading around school, in every classroom, with every teacher. We want our pupils to have a curiosity for reading new fiction and to explore the world around them through both non-fiction and fiction.

At Key Stage 4, pupils work towards predominantly GCSE qualifications. At Broughton we recognise that KS4 option choices made at the end of Year 9, that only include GCSE qualifications is not appropriate for all our pupils. As a consequence, we also offer a range of other approved high value 14-16 qualifications, Technical Awards and Vocational Courses, that meet the destination profiles of our pupils, and broaden the curriculum and pathways available.

At Broughton, there really is something for everyone!
Many of our pupils have taken part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, others have chosen to join the school concert band, drama club or one of our modern foreign language or music groups. Sport is a real strength and pupils participate in a wide range of activities. We enter as many local and regional competitions as possible, enabling our pupils to improve and succeed in equal measure.
